Bohol’s 18th Ubi Festival opens today 


TAGBILARAN CITY, Pebrero 20 (PIA)--The three-day 18th Ubi Festival opened today with this year’s festival theme: “Ubi, Hamiling Lagutmon Ikapasigarbo sa mga Turista sa Tanang Panahon.” 

Office of the Provincial Agriculturist OIC Larry Pamugas, SP Chair on Agriculture Abeleon Damalerio, Balilihan Mayor Pureza Chatto, Acting Vice Gov. Venzencio Arcamo and Gov. Edgar Chatto led the ribbon cutting and opening of exhibits held at Plaza Rizal in Tagbilaran City at past 12 noon. 

A motorcade from Plaza Rizal to Island City Mall followed after the ubi exhibit’s ribbon cutting. 

Then a program was held at the mall where local ubi growers, non-government organizations and representatives from the academe gathered. 

In his message during the opening program, Chatto congratulated the local ubi growers in Bohol and challenged them to make the Ubi Day today a daily activity of spreading the love for ubi and agriculture as a ‘larawan’ of love to our province. 

“Let us make our Ubi Day today a daily activity of spreading love to our partners and the youth. The love for ubi, the love for agriculture as our ‘larawan’ of love to our province of Bohol,” Chatto said. 

A total of 24 localities with potential for ubi growing send their delegates to join the festival. 

These areas include Albur, Alicia, Antequera, Baclayon, Balilihan, Calape, Carmen, Corella, Cortes, Dauis, Dimiao, Duero, Jagna, Lila, Mabini, Maribojoc, Panglao, San Isidro, Sevilla, Sikatuna, Talibon, Ubay, and Tagbilaran City. 

The Ubi contest such as the Binignit Eating Contest and Ubi Challenge Eating Contest was held at at the Island City Mall today, while the Best Ubi Booth/Ubi Exhibit Contest and Indigenous/Endemic Crops Production Technology Contest was held at Plaza Rizal. 

On February 21, the selling of ubi products and judging of best booth/Ubi exhibit will continue at Plaza Rizal, while the Literary Musical Contest which includes Ubi Balak, Ubi Kuradang, Ubi Rap/Jingle, Bugno sa Rondalya and Farmer Yoyoy Villame Voice a Like Contest will be held at the Island City Mall. 

Closing and awarding program of Ubi Festival 2018 winners will be held on February 22 at Plaza Rizal.
