Opening of 2 new PCIC Bohol offices
extend protection to farmers, fisherfolk

TAGBILARAN CITY, Mar. 26 (PIA)--The opening of two extension offices of the Philippine Crop Insurance Corporation (PCIC) in Bohol will serve in protecting the produce and crops of farmers and fisherfolks.

On March 19, the PCIC extension office in Ubay was inaugurated to serve the farmers and fisherfolk in the northern part of the province.

The following day, March 20, PCIC opened its extension office in Tagbilaran City located in the spanking new BOPEL Building in F. Rocha Street.

The two extension offices aim to bring the services of the agency closer to its intended clientele, the farmers and fisherfolks.

The PCIC is a government-owned and controlled corporation, which mandate is to provide through crop insurance.

“Kining atong pagbukas isip sanong sa nagka-anam og kadaghang mga mag-uuma ug mananagat nga angay hatagan og proteksiyon ilabi na nga nag usab-usab ang atong panahon” (The opening of the offices extends support to the increasing number of farmers and fisherfolks, who needs protection since our climate has changed), said PCIC Regional Manager II Crescencio Deligero Jr. in his welcome message during the opening of the extension office in Tagbilaran.

The agency offers crop insurance in the event of damage to crops in relation to calamities, disease, and other types of damage affecting palay, corn, and other high value crops.

Included in the insurance coverage is the machineries used in farming. This way, the farmers can rest easy knowing there would be support for the replacement of machineries that may impede the productivity of the farms.

Antonio Uy, the Vice President of the Corporate Business Affairs Group of the PCIC said not only the crops are given insurance, but the farmers are insured as well.

Crop insurance is important in a country such as the Philippines as we are visited by a number of typhoons a year and included in the Pacific Ring of Fire.

Farmers often face damage to their crops as a result of disasters, which will erode the capital and drive farms to the brink of collapse.

The PCIC owes its existence from PD 1467 and Republic Act 8175, tasking the agency to provide insurance to farmers’ crops to protect from damage due to disasters. (ecb/PIA7-Bohol)
