DOST dangles scholarships
or scientists, technologists
TAGBILARAN CITY, August 18 (PIA)—Young Boholanos who have the capacity and are science and technology inclined but may lack the finances to pursue proper education may have this chance as the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) dangles irresistible scholarship offers in a bid to prop up the country’s needs for more scientists and technology wizards.
Up for grabs and can be had after passing the qualifying examinations and getting past the screening are three scholarships: for those Grade VI and entering high school, for Grade XII entering college of the Undergraduate Scholarships and for Junior Level Science Scholarships for third year college science students, according to DOST Bohol Provincial Director Vina Antopina.
Aside from an increased number of slots this year, the DOST Science Education Institute also allows student scholars a higher monthly stipend, which could be a huge help for poor but deserving science and technology inclined students.
Antopina said the science and technology (S&T) undergraduate scholarships program aims to stimulate and attract talented Filipino youth to pursue lifetime productive careers in S&T and ensure a steady, adequate supply of qualified human resources which can steer the country towards national progress.
For the undergraduate scholarship, those who can qualify can either be via RA 7687 of the “Science and Technology Scholarship Act of 1994,” for talented and deserving students intend to pursue studies in basic sciences, engineering, applied sciences, science and math teaching but whose families’ socio-economic status are below minimum values set for certain cap.
Or, a student can get the scholarship by merit: a scholarship awarded to students with high aptitude in science and mathematics and are willing to pursue careers in the fields of science and technology.
Speaking at the Kapihan sa PIA, the newly promoted DOST Chief also explained that aside from the undergrad scholarship is the Junior Level Scholarship which can be via RA 10612, which aims to strengthen the country’s S&T education by fast-tracking graduates in the sciences, mathematics and engineering who shall teach science and mathematics in secondary schools throughout the country.
Or a junior level scholar can come in via RA 7687: “Science and Technology Scholarship Act of 1994,” provides for scholarships to economically challenged yet talented and deserving students and by merit, awarded to students with high aptitude in science and mathematics and are willing to pursue careers in the fields of science and technology.
This year, scholars can get bigger monthly stipend of P7K compared to the P5K or P6K for previous scholars, Antopina said.
Scholars also get an annual P40K tuition and other school fees subsidy, P10K for book allowance, one-time P1K uniform allowance; one-time P1K graduation allowance, an economy-class round trip fare per year for those studying away their home provinces, and group insurance.
Qualifications for undergraduate scholarship applicants include natural born Filipino Citizens, among the top 5% of non-STEM strand graduating senior high schools or STEM strand takers graduating senior high school, has good moral character and qualifies for the S&T scholarship test.
Interested Grade 12 students then can submit their scholarship applications at the DOST Bohol August 31, 2018. Applications forms are available from the high school principal’s offices, the DOST S&T center in Bohol and from the DOST website as examinations will be on October 21, 2018.
Incoming 3rd year college students taking identified S&T programs are likewise invited to apply in the Junior Level Science Scholarship (JLSS) program.
