Ubi harvest in Bohol reaches 600K kilos this year

TAGBILARAN CITY, January 30 (PIA)--Ubi harvest in the province grew from 400,000 kilos to 600,000 kilos this year. 

This was bared by Office of the Provincial Agriculturist OIC Dr. Larry Pamugas during the opening of the 19th Ubi Festival on Tuesday afternoon at the Bohol Agricultural Promotions Center (APC) Grounds, in Barangay Dao, this city. 

The 19th Ubi Festival kicked off with a motorcade around the city and ended at the venue. 

Gov. Edgar Chatto and Korean Project for International Agriculture (KOPIA) Director Woongoo Ha led the ribbon cutting rites to open the three-day festival which will run until January 31. 

In his message during the opening program, the governor said that growing the sacred crop ubi is part of the great plan to boost Bohol economy and lower poverty. 

He added that Bohol’s development framework has agriculture, tourism, and information technology as its pillars of growth. 

“Food sufficiency is a nice problem because it will encourage business for farmers which will bring growth to our economy”, Chatto said. 

On his part, Bohol Ubi Growers Association (BUGA) President Floriano Gamay encouraged the youth to become farmers and to become ubi growers. 

This year’s festival is themed “Ubi, Dungog sa Bohol Padayong Amomahon ug Palamboon Sa Mga Mag-Uuma’ng Bol-anon”, and participated by around 30 exhibitors from Bohol's local government units, people's organization and private sector. 

Executive Assistant Billy Tongco represented Cong. Rene Relampagos, Board Member Abel Damalerio represented Cong. Art Yap, Alvin Alcuzar representing Tagbilaran City Mayor John Geesnell Yap II and Mutya ng Pilipinas Global Beauty Queen Pauline Amelinckx also graced the opening of this year’s festival. 

The Ubi Festival is celebrated annually in Bohol as recognition to ubi growers across the province since 2000. 

Boholanos’ love affair with the ube is highlighted in the provincial anthem wherein it is the only crop mentioned in the song. (ecb/PIA7-Bohol)
