Radyo Pilipinas features
Bohol SK’s help to LSIs
CORTES, Bohol June 22, (PIA) -- They may have gone home and have reunited with their families, but locally stranded individuals (LSIs) who received government assistance after a month of being isolated in compliance with government measures to prevent the spread of coronavirus disease may have to thank Board Member Christian Victor Bolos III for that.
That is what the young Boholano leader shared to Radyo Pilipinas Network Briefing on June 19 as among the youth’s top contributions as the province battles the virus and its potentially devastating effects to the local population and the economy.
Bolos, who heads the federation of Bohol youth leaders in the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK), saw that the “lockdown” have suddenly marooned Boholano LSIs elsewhere who have no means to survive but to spend out of their pockets.
"While it is incumbent upon governments to render assistance and provide aid for those in need especially with food, medicines and shelter services, still LSIs form the last among the priorities of LGUs who also have to manage their scant resources for their constituents on community quarantines," Bolos admitted.
Even as the government has ruled that its Social Amelioration Program makes these LSIs among the beneficiaries, still Boholano LSIs claimed they had not received any from their host local government units.
Boholano LSIs being non-residents in areas where they are stranded are also not issued Quarantine Passes which are necessary for one to go out and secure food and other key services to survive.
According to Bolos in his sponsored resolution, groups of stranded Boholanos are not listed as among those who are entitled to receive assistance and were not even given quarantine passes in their respective host areas.
Most of these are students whose classes have been suspended, or workers whose workplaces have closed.
During these abnormal times, the Provincial Government of Bohol provides aid to LSIs in need here in the form of food and financial assistance.
Non-Boholano LSIs have received assistance even when they are not listed as residents in any of their host barangays, he claimed.
The young Boholano legislator expects the same treatment for Boholano LSIs in places elsewhere.
On this, by way of a resolution, Bolos rallied his companions in session to support his request for local chief executives to provide assistance and issue quarantine passes in the areas of jurisdiction for LSIs, especially the stranded Boholanos.
The move was among the initiatives the young legislator shared to Radyo Pilipinas hosted by Presidential Communications Operations Office Sec. Jose Ruperto Martin Andanar during his Network Briefing on June 19.
As a youth representative, Bolos called upon his fellow Boholano youth to continue learning in many creative ways.
While it is sad that classes are disrupted due to the measures implemented to curb the spread of the virus, he said “learning can also be from out of the classroom.” (rahc/PIA-7/Bohol)
