increase; carabao, cattle fall
TAGBILARAN CITY, Bohol (PIA)—Bohol may still continue to wrestle and try to contain the African Swine Fever (ASF) which has caused the depopulation of hundreds of tons of hogs in Bohol, but did you know that the total production of live pigs and pork in metric tons here, continue to rise from 2022 to 2024?
According to a report by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), in 2022, Bohol produced 43,178.56 metric tons of live and pork meat.
By 2023, when the SAF has been reported to hit more and more towns, the local production of hogs and pork rose to 44,656.43 metric tons, or some 1.01 percent, despite the uncertainty of the disease and the general apprehension of a full-blown animal epidemic.
In 2024, when yet another ASF incursion hit interior towns, production of pigs and pork even surged For poultry production, 2022 saw by the end of the year some 33,679.64 metric ton of chicken meat.
By 2023, and amidst the threat of El Nino that also affected chicken feeds, production sagged a bit to 31,202.52. to 46,939.90 or a notable 5.1 percent.
2I 2024, production soared to 36,644.20 of a good 17.4 percent.
For chicken egg, production in 2020 reached 6,601.32 metric tons. By 2023, the figure also moved to a 12.9 percent increase.
For ducks, Bohol records 19.38 metric tons in 2022, which increased to 21.36 by 2023. And then by 2024, a huge increase was noted on duck production at 126.5 percent with 27.01 metric tons.
Although not a very known producer of duck eggs, Bohol still managed to have 23.14 metric tons of raw balut in 2022 and 26.72 in 2023. By 2024, Bohol capped a 26.90 or 0.7 percent increase in production.
Meanwhile, goat production in Bohol also showed a promise with its 495.71 metric tons in 2022, 528.08 in 2023 and 11.6 percent increase in 2024 with 589.62.
As to carabao production, Bohol, according to the PSA had 2,824.72 metric tons in 2022, which went down to 2704.91 in 2023. By 2024, the figure continued to dip to 2520.66 or a -6.8 percent decline.
Cattle also suffered the same fate.
In 2020, Bohol records 3,781.69 metric tons, something which has already shown signs of increase in 2023 with 4099.66 metric tons.
But by the end of 2024, there was a sudden decrease in production and fall of -8.4 percent ending the year with only some 3,755.06 metric tons net.
