order or be removed from office
TAGBILARAN CITY, Bohol, June 29 (PIA)
-- President Rodrigo Roa Duterte on Thursday warned mayors that if they fail to
enforce law and order in their respective municipalities, he would strip them
of their police power.
"If ang mayor cannot enforce law
and order in their municipality, I will just withdraw his deputization. They
can just sit there as a civilian," Duterte told reporters in Panglao,
Bohol during a media interview.
The President brought up the issue on
the “nonchalant” attitude of some officials toward the problem of illegal drugs
and crime, prompting him to direct the Department of the Interior and Local
Government to conduct an audit of local officials' performance.
“Insofar as law and order, you are the
mayor. If you are not doing anything, I will file charges against you and
sabihin ko kay Año, 'i-dismiss mo.' You recommend for the dismissal and I will
sign it.
“If that is the way you behave as a
mayor, you better go out. Eh di ibigay mo dito sa mga vice mayors. Marami ‘yan
sila naghihintay (So you give it to the vice mayors. Many of them are
waiting," the President added.
Duterte was in Bohol to attend the
25th Annual National Convention of the Vice Mayor’s League of the Philippines
(VMLP) attended by over 600 of the 1,632 member local government units.
The President arrived at the Bellevue
Pavilion in Panglao around 4:00 p.m. with Special Assistant to the President
Sec. Christopher “Bong” Go, Sec. Francis Tolentino of the Office of the
Political Adviser, and Presidential Assistant for the Visayas Michael Dino.
This is the second visit of the
President in Bohol. His first official visit was during his security briefing
during the Abu Sayyaf attack in Inabanga, Bohol in April 2017.
