‘Scitech writing’ for campus
Journalists with STII at ICM

TAGBILARAN CITY, Bohol April 6 (PIA) – Schools who are still groping their way to equip their student writers in science and technology journalism can check out the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) skills enhancement forum on Science simplified: Decoding S&T writing for Campus Journalists this April 19 from 8:00 to 12:00 at the Activity center of the Island City Mall.

Set as yet another of the simultaneous multi-events to mark the 2024 Regional Science and Technology Week, the forum would provide the participants practical tools and strategies to simplify the research processes for students intending to enhance their capabilities in writing about science, technology and innovation in an interesting manner.

The lack of resource persons in STI reportage, and considering that experts in these subjects use specific jargon, the biggest challenge for ST journalists is to put these S&T concepts into understandable ideas and shake off the shroud of mystery in explaining scientific processes.

Ideally set for school paper advisers, editors in chief and S&T directors as well as student writers, the forum would delved into equipping student journalists with the skills to effectively communicate complex scientific concepts in a simplified and engaging manner, shares Vina Antopina, Bohol Provincial Science and Technology Center chief.

The forum also seeks to promote scientific literacy and interest among students, preparing them to cover science, technology and innovation-related topics more accurately, and bring in a fresh view of the often seen as a lofty science and technology in campus publications, she added.

To be handled by the DOST’s Science and Technology Information Institute (STII), one of the DOST’s service institutes, the forum would be perfect for Bohol student writers who dream of making science and technology a real science of the people by making these science concepts easier to chew and intellectually palatable.

When you become a bridge between the world of science and your community, you need to know as much as the scientists and then you translate their knowledge into words which your audience can understand, said a school paper adviser on the challenge of scitech journalists.

It is struggle between precision which is the way science works and simplicity, which is the writer’s goal. The writer must be able to express the precise details of science accurately in simple terms.

What makes S&T interesting as the newest frontier in reporting is that it is science and technology in human applications.

We are excited to know that finally, someone who could be capable enough to guide writers in S&T is available, this would be a great news for Bohol student campus writers, the PIA who has been handling these journalism workshops in Bohol said. (rahc/PIA-7/Bohol)
SCIENCE FOR THE PEOPLE. Making science and technology concepts understandable has always been a challenge for student writers who have no proper training to do so. The DOST is finally bringing the experts in an forum this week at the ICM. (PIABohol)
