Talibon HS team champs in
Bien Unido fiesta cagefest
TAGBILARAN CITY, Bohol January 5, (PIA)—A private high school basketball team from Talibon asserted their teamwork superiority to emerge as the champions of the Bien Unido Fiesta Open Inter High School Basketball Tournament as a town fiesta highlight.
North Coast Bohol Institute Incorporated (NCBI) cagers of nearby Talibon town, did not mind that they were the new kids on the block fighting in a far-away land, and further solidified their defenses, used a better ball rotation and dominated the boards to grab the victory from a much favored home team.
Not only did they win the crown, NCBI also grabbed the Finals Most Valuable Player (MVP) in its star player Jayvee Torreon, during a basketball league that was successfully conducted with the able leadership of Mayor Rene Borenaga and Vice Mayor Ramon Arcenal in tandem with the Sangguniang Bayan members, according to basketball league coordinator Maui Item.
NCBI beat the crowd favorite and homegrown cagers of President Carlos P. Garcia Tech. Voc. School of Fisheries and Arts of Puerto San Pedro, Bien Unido, Bohol to settle for the first place.
Meanwhile, Hingotanan National High School also beat Bien Unido Academy, of Barangay Liberty, Bien Unido, Bohol in the fight for third game that had the crowd growing wild.
The Bien Unido Fiesta Basketball League opened to three categories: Super Seniors, seniors and inter high school: all games played inside the town gymnasium, Item who used to be the town information officer said.
In the Super Senior, which is the 40 years old and above category, the team from Barangay Pinamgo of Jao Island took the championship crown after a series of court hostilities and beating Barangay Nueva Esperanza in the finals.
Taking the second place was the team from island barangay Bilangbilangan East, while third place went to Barangay Mandawa Super seniors team.
Bilangbilangan East’s star cager Sanel Cabalda also grabbed the finals MVP for the age category.
In the Senior Category, Barangay Bilangbilangan East grabbed the championship trophy when they beat Poblacion’s Sampaguita Village (Poblacion) in an exciting match.
Settling for 2nd place was Barangay Hingotanan West, which prevailed over Barangay Nueva Esperanza Patriots.
It was by far a very successful event that built the highlight for the December 28-29 town fiesta, an ecstatic Mayor Borenaga said.
In a town where basketball is among the most favored sports activities, bringing the island players to the mainland for competitions has been among the most awaited fiesta league highlights.
A town with 15 barangays, 6 of which are coastal, one mainland and the rest are island barangays, apart from fishing and seaweed farming which is the most promising livelihood for the residents, basketball usually unites them in hardcourts located in almost everywhere in town and in the island barangays.
Basketball has also produced for the town some key players who are usually not known in Bohol but asserts their prowess in colleges in Cebu, which is a brief 3 hours by boat from the town. (rahc/PIA-7/Bohol)
