Independence Day message…
Chatto calls for unity, amidst
extended post-election hate
TAGBILARAN CITY,
Bohol, June 12 (PIA)—Amidst post-election trading of barbed words, hate
messages and racist slurs from both camps in social media, outgoing Bohol
Governor Edgar Chatto appealed and urged Boholanos to finally unite and support
the next administration.
Speaking as a
highlight in his Independence Day message to Boholanos gathered in front of the
old Provincial Capitol now converted into the Bohol Satellite Office of the
National Museum, Chatto, whose three terms as the province’s top executive is
marked by pronounced victories, is moving up to represent Bohol in
Congress.
But, a month after
elections, opposing camps who alleged being taunted by the other, still
protract the fight and hurl barbed accusations, even as proper complaints have
accordingly been filed to proper authorities.
“What pains us is a
divided province,” Chatto bared.
Citing Bohol as
having stood even after being threatened by poverty, terrorism and natural
calamities, the governor who also completed three terms as congressman and vice
governor then, cited the division on social media as the most imminent threat.
The issue which the
governor brought up, was also the same point which the Independence Day
homilist talked about: the unregulated use of social media to destroy.
Threatened by social
media which could destroy the moral fibers of the youth, Chatto called on
parents, elders to be more responsible in inculcating to the young the value to
use social media positively to usher in the change.
Chatto hinted that
he fears that if the hostilities continue, “we shall lead them to a future is
bleak, dark and inconsistent with our dreams.
For him who guided
his long public service by dreaming and paying the price for it to be true,
Chatto started his commemorative message with not fearing to dream dreams, even
big ones, as long as there is willingness to pay the price for it.
When he pointed out
that many of Bohol’s dreams have been realized.
Bohol has been
facing challenges but the people’s resolve and strength have helped surmount
these challenges.
“Terrorism almost
made it to Bohol, but we stood firm and we stood on our freedom, he reminded
the crowd attending the annual event.
But the threat of
the abuse of technology has clearly affected the governor who will end his term
on June 30.
On this, he urged:
“Whatever support you have given to this administration, I urge and I pray that
you give the same or even more support. [to the incoming administration],
Chatto appealed.
The 121st
Philippine Independence Anniversary adopted the theme: Kalayaan 2019: Tapang ng
Bayan, Malasakit sa Mamayanan. (rahc/PIA-7/Bohol)
THREAT AS
ALARMING. “Terrorism almost made it to
Bohol, but we stood firm and we stood on our freedom, but the threat of the
abuse of technology will ultimately divide the province, Gov Edgar Chatto said
as he calls everyone to unite and support the new administration.
