Haguilanan’s ‘Run With Me’
funds PWUD rehabilitation
TAGBILARAN
CITY, Bohol, October 12 (PIA)—Haguilanan Catigbian proves to the country that
it would take a village to pull back to the line its persons who use drugs
(PWUDs) via a sustainable rehabilitation program.
And last
Sunday, October 6, Barangay Chairman Teodoro Paña led his community, to join a
race that would put up the funds for its community-based rehab program.
Billed by
the organizers as Run With Me, the race was for 10 kilometers male and female
categories and the exclusive race for villagers: the three kilometers male and
female categories.
The race
had participants from as far as Cebu, Tagbilaran City and racers from nearby
towns either get hosted for an overnight stay or drove early to join the race.
Organizers
said about 200 runners from all ages joined the race.
We want the
race to be owned by everyone, because it is always everyone’s responsibility to
help our brothers who go astray, Paña, shared.
We
envisioned a hog litter production which would be managed by our PWUDs, and
anything that we can get out of the race, we will purchase a livestock, let the
PWUDs take care of it and disperse the litter to more PWUDs when the sow would
have piglets, he explained during the opening program.
At the
starting line, 10 PWUDS who would benefit from the funds in the registration came
in running shoes and sweated it out as a day of detoxifying.
Nine PWUDs
run in the three kilometer race and one kept up the stride with professional
and amateur runners in the 10 kilometer distance, reported Jessie Ejoc,
co-organizer and member of Bohol Runners Community (BRCOM).
The race
also started with a hour hour Zumba session as a pre-run stretching exercise.
At the
gun-start, runners for the 10 kilometer distance spilled out from the Haguilanan
Basketball Court and threaded their way to the half distance in from of the
Catigbian Public Market where a water station marked the turn-around marker.
A few
minutes later, the exclusive three-kilometer distance race for residents of
Haguilanan rolled off, parents guiding their kids, teen-agers holding hands and
aged runners humped and puffed amidst the flashing lights of the police car
that acted as race marshals.
