DOST PHIVOLCS brings to Bohol
disaster communication w’shop
TAGBILARAN CITY, Bohol, Oct 7 (PIA)—In time for the tenth year anniversary of the Bohol Earthquake in 2013, the Department of Science and Technology’s Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology brings to Bohol a seminar workshop intended to capacitate disaster communicators to ensure the accuracy and consistency of the messages being relayed to the public and to promote effective science and risk communication.
Set on October 12, 2023 at the Capitol Ceremonial Hall, the seminar workshop billed as “PHIVOLCS InfoPress: Understanding and Communicating Geologic Hazards in Region VII,” is set for media practitioners and government Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) and information officers.
This is to provide them an avenue to listen and understand as scientists explain essential geologic hazards information and commonly-used terms in reporting volcanoes, earthquakes, and tsunamis, for their future use in disaster reporting, according to organizers.
PHIVOLCS InfoPress: Understanding and Communicating Geologic Hazards in Region VII intends to improve understanding of geologic scenarios to promote appropriate preparedness measures, clarify commonly-used terms in reporting geologic hazards, orient participants on how to properly respond to disasters.
The seminar is for private and government media, DOST regional, and provincial officers, provincial, city and municipal information officers and DRRM Officers, RDRRMC member agencies (OCD, PCO, PIA) Information Officers or its equivalent.
Resource persons are scientists from the Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (DOST-PHIVOLCS), according to organizers.
Topics during the day-long seminar includes the rationale and an introduction to DOST-PHIVOLCS, by no less that DOST PHIVOLCS Director Teresito C. Bacolcol, Review of Common Terms by DOST Science Research Specialist Melissa Mae P. Tamayo, Understanding the Science of Earthquake Scenarios by DOST
PHIVOLCS Supervising Science Research Specialist Jeffrey S. Perez, Understanding the Science of Tsunamis
By DOST PHIVOLCS Senior Science Research Specialist Charmaine V. Villamil and understanding the Science of Volcanoes by Dr. Ma. Mylene M. Villegas DOST PHIVOLCS’ Chief Science Research Specialist.
In the afternoon, the seminar workshop continues with Communicating Geohazard Information and Proper Response by Lucille Rose D.M. Sanico, Senior Science Research Specialist, and then the open forum followed by a workshop.
The training workshop is also in partnership with DOST- Region VII, Philippine Information Agency (PIA) – Region VII, and Provincial Government of Bohol. (rahc/PIA-7/Bohol)
