TAGBILARAN CITY, Bohol (PIA)—The province recently played host to the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines’ (CBCP) 130th Annual Retreat and Plenary Assembly, which highlighted Bohol’s faith tourism.

More than 80 bishops and over 100 Synodal delegates —including priests, consecrated persons, and laypeople —gathered in Bohol last week for a historic Church-wide reflection and spiritual renewal.

The retreat and plenary assembly was held in the province for the first time in 130 years since its inception.

The event also placed Bohol’s rich religious and cultural heritage into the national spotlight.

“The bishop’s decision to come to Bohol is not just for a change in venue. It is deeply symbolic,” said Bishop Alberto Uy of the Diocese of Tagbilaran in his message during the welcome Mass at Our Lady of the Assumption Shrine and Parish in Dauis town on June 30.

Like Jesus moving from village to village, Uy said the bishops came not just to rest but to reflect, pray, and walk with the people.

The bishop said he believed that Bohol’s known tourist spots are among the factors that prompted the CBCP to choose the province as the venue for the weeklong event.

The annual retreat for the bishops was held in Tagbilaran City from June 30 to July 4, while the Plenary Assembly took place in Anda town from July 5 to 7.

The provincial government of Bohol hosted a welcome dinner for the bishops and synodal delegates on July 1 at the Bohol Cultural Center.

Guests were treated to a night of music and cultural performances that reflected Boholano warmth and artistry.

In his message, Gov. Erico Aristotle Aumentado said the province’s hosting of the gathering affirms its potential as a center for religious and spiritual tourism.

“This is not just a Church event — it is a recognition of what Bohol has to offer. Our historical churches, religious traditions, and warm communities create a perfect environment for reflection and pilgrimage,” Aumentado said.

During the Mass on July 1, Cardinal Pablo Virgilio David, current CBCP president, reminded fellow bishops about the need for steadfast faith, especially amid trials.(ECB/PIA7-Bohol)
